Expert Assignment & Category Scoping
Every review begins with a deliberate matching process: we identify the right expert for the category before a single word is written. For a personal finance buying guide, that means a Certified Financial Planner or licensed financial advisor. For a health supplement review, we assign a registered dietitian or pharmacist. For a power tool round-up, a licensed tradesperson.
Once the expert is assigned, they define the category scope: which products merit inclusion, what price tiers will be covered, and which use-cases will be the primary focus. This scoping phase ensures our reviews answer real questions from real buyers — not abstract comparisons of products no one actually buys.
We conduct preliminary market research at this stage, surveying consumer forums, Reddit communities, and professional networks to understand what buyers genuinely want to know. Our expert then builds a structured evaluation framework tailored to the category — a custom scorecard with weighted criteria.
Product Acquisition & Hands-On Testing
We do not rely on manufacturer-provided data, press releases, or spec sheets as the basis for our ratings. Every product in a round-up is either purchased independently or acquired for review on the explicit understanding that we will publish an honest assessment regardless of the outcome.
Hands-on testing follows the structured framework developed in Step 1. Tests are conducted under controlled, consistent conditions so that results are directly comparable across products. Where relevant, we also conduct real-world testing — using products in the contexts actual buyers will use them, not just in laboratory conditions.
Testing periods vary by category: a mattress is evaluated over a minimum of 30 nights; a financial platform is used for at least 60 days; a kitchen appliance is put through at least 20 preparation sessions. We document our testing with notes, photographs, and in some cases video, to ensure our findings are reproducible and auditable.
Structured Scoring
After testing is complete, our expert completes the structured scorecard developed in Step 1. Each criterion is scored on a standardized scale and weighted according to its importance to the typical buyer in that category.
For most categories, our scoring framework includes five primary dimensions: Performance (how well does it do its core job?), Usability (how easy is it to set up, use, and maintain?), Value (does the price reflect the quality?), Reliability (how durable and consistent is it?), and Support (how strong is the warranty, customer service, and manufacturer track record?).
Individual dimension scores are aggregated into an overall rating on a 10-point scale. Products are then ranked according to their aggregated scores, with tie-breaking criteria applied in cases of very close ratings. Our rankings are a direct product of this scoring — not editorial preference, brand recognition, or affiliate commission rates.
Editorial Review & Fact-Checking
Before any review is published, it undergoes a two-stage editorial process. First, a senior editor reviews the article for clarity, balance, and completeness. They verify that the article gives appropriate coverage to both strengths and weaknesses — not just the positives. They also ensure the prose is accessible to a non-expert reader without being condescending to knowledgeable ones.
Second, a dedicated fact-checker independently verifies all factual claims: product specifications, prices, safety certifications, clinical data, and any statistics cited. Claims that cannot be verified against a primary source are either removed or re-written with appropriate qualification.
We also conduct a conflict-of-interest review at this stage: confirming that the author has no undisclosed financial relationship with any brand featured in the review. If a concern is identified, the article is reassigned or the conflict is disclosed prominently.
Publication, Monitoring & Updates
Publication is not the end of our process — it's the beginning of ongoing stewardship. Every ExpertPicked review is enrolled in a monthly review cycle. Our editors check for new product launches, price changes, discontinuations, and changes in brand reputation or customer satisfaction.
If a top-ranked product is discontinued, surpassed by a new model, or receives a significant uptick in customer complaints, we update the review immediately — not at the next monthly cycle. We monitor manufacturer announcements, major consumer review platforms, and industry publications to catch these changes as quickly as possible.
When a review is substantively updated, we note the update date prominently in the article. We believe readers deserve to know when guidance was last verified. We also maintain an archive of significant changes so readers who want to understand how our recommendations have evolved can do so.
Questions About Our Process?
We believe transparency builds trust. If you have questions about how we reviewed a specific product or want to understand our scoring for a particular category, we're happy to explain.
